Let’s compare a website to a person. A person has eyes, ears, legs, and arms while a website has text, images, videos, and buttons. On the outside, both appear pretty straightforward, but they wouldn’t look the way they do without a code. A person’s happens to be a genetic code — DNA — whereas a website’s code is called HTML.

Websites are made of files, just like the ones you have on your computer. But what makes a website’s files different from regular files is that they’re written in this HTML code. In order to see a website the way you do on the web, you need something that decodes all the HTML. That’s where your web browser comes in.

Your browser decodes all the hex codes into the cat videos, Pinterest fails, and embarrassing posts by your ex-boyfriend you see in front of you.
